Digital and Data Literacy in Teaching Lab (DDLitLab)
Digital and Data Literacy in Teaching Lab (DDLitLab)
How do digital formats impact academic content and teaching processes? How can students develop a critical, reflective understanding of data practices and their societal implications? These questions are at the core of the "Digital and Data Literacy in Teaching Lab" (DDLitLab) project. The project promotes innovative teaching methods with a focus on "Data Literacy Education" and supports teaching initiatives across all faculties as well as interdisciplinary courses.
The DDLitLab incorporates digital teaching formats and environments not just as supplementary tools but as foundational elements in the design of its programs. The goal is to enable a deep integration of digital formats from the outset. The project is funded by the Foundation for Innovation in Higher Education with approximately 5 million euros over a period of four and a half years.
What is Digital and Data Literacy?
"Digital and Data Literacy" refers to the ability to understand and actively shape digital data processes. This includes the collection, storage, processing, analysis, and visualization of data, as well as the critical reflection on the impact of these practices in science, law, culture, politics, and the economy. A key goal of the project is to equip students with the skills to engage critically and responsibly with digital data.
Interdisciplinary Program: Data Worlds
The centerpiece of the project is the interdisciplinary program Datenwelten (Data Worlds), a two-semester lecture series with practical exercises. In this program, students learn to analyze and address data-driven challenges from various perspectives. In addition, the DDLitLab supports innovative teaching ideas in cross-disciplinary and transfer-oriented courses.
For students who want to engage deeply with data-related issues, the project offers the opportunity to conduct their own research within student research groups focused on Data Literacy. This allows them to explore topics in-depth and enhance their skills in this field.
Enhancing Digital Didactic Competencies: DUTy
Another core goal of the DDLitLab is the development of Digital University Teaching Literacy (DUTy) for educators. In collaboration with the Hamburg Center for University Teaching and Learning (HUL), structures are being created to help educators expand their digital didactic competencies, enabling them to design and deliver digital and hybrid teaching formats with confidence.
To support this, the DDLitLab is developing key resources such as the Lehre-Navi, a comprehensive directory of all offerings for educators, and the Lehrpfad, which provides practical guidance for implementing digital teaching concepts.
