Digital Edition of the Hamburg Drawing Compendium – Levezow Album
This project combines research-based learning with an exhibition initiative, developed in collaboration with the Hamburg State and University Library (SUB) and the Hamburger Kunsthalle. The focus is on a previously unexplored object from the SUB – a sketchbook from the late 17th century, which contains drawings from various fields of knowledge: anatomy, antiquity, proportional studies, natural history, and image science.
Each page in the album is accompanied by detailed explanatory texts and links to its origins or comparable illustrations, written by students. The concept is inspired by the informative approach of the St. Alban Psalter, blending historical context with modern interactivity.
The primary goal of this project is to offer an enriching, immersive educational experience that combines historical art analysis with interactive digital media. It aims to make art history accessible and engaging for a wide audience, fostering a deeper appreciation and better understanding of the artworks presented in the digital album.
- Text creation for some images: Following the model of the St. Alban Psalter, each image will be accompanied by an informative and easily understandable text. These texts will explain the significance, origins, and nuances of the images.
- Detailed explanations and links: Some images in the album will be provided with comprehensive explanations, deepening the viewer’s understanding. Where relevant, links to original sources or comparable images will be included to provide deeper insights into the history and context of each artwork.
- Comparative illustrations: Special focus will be placed on images that are copies or derivatives of other artworks. For example, the title image, which partially replicates a world map by Willem Blaeu, will be provided to illustrate the relationship between the album’s images and their sources.
- Comment section: The digital album will feature an interactive comment section, allowing visitors to engage with the content. This platform will enable users to suggest alternative sources, share insights, and participate in an ongoing dialogue about the artworks.
- Informational blog: In addition to the album, the project includes a blog section. This space will be dedicated to accessible texts covering various thematic aspects related to the images. It will serve as an educational resource and a platform for ongoing discussions and exploration.
