The team led by Dr. Seid Muhie Yimam from the Hub of Computing and Data Science (HCDS) secured a grant from the Google exploreCSR program. The fund enabled the organization of a two-week summer school in Ethiopia focused on Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, specifically designed for women. Registrations had to be closed after just four days due to tenfold oversubscription.

From April 29 to May 12, 2024, participants had the opportunity to learn about the latest technologies and their fundamentals in AI and Data Science, apply them in small projects, and reflect together. The participants, representing various universities across the country, brought with them a diverse range of academic backgrounds and research expertise. This interdisciplinary environment aimed to equip them with valuable insights and practical experience, enhancing their understanding and application of critical future technologies.
Different mentors from Bahir Dar University, the Polytechnic University of Mexico City, the University of California, Berkeley, and HCDS at the University of Hamburg led the summer school. The initiative promoted diversity and inclusion in the fields of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science and contributed to bridging the gender gap in technology.
