The Hub of Computing and Data Science (HCDS), together with other partners from the University of Hamburg (UHH), participated in this year's Homecoming Homeport Event. Under the motto "DEEPTECH X FUTURE PORTS," AUFBRUCH.Hamburg and homePORT (a brand of HPA) have been hosting the unique "Prototype & Technology Festival" in the Port of Hamburg for the third time since 2022. The event showcased a variety of innovative maritime solutions in mobile sensor technology, automation, robotics, AR/VR/digital twin, and 3D printing. The program was complemented by expert panel discussions in the maritime-industrial context, use cases, exciting tech sessions, and constructive conversations with a diverse range of exhibitors and networks.
HCDS took the opportunity to present itself and one of its research projects, RESCUE-MATE. In light of rising sea levels, more frequent extreme weather events, and the increasing number of residents who need to be evacuated and cared for in the event of a disaster, the RESCUE-MATE research project is dedicated to the challenge of creating situational awareness and optimizing information flows in the scenario of a storm surge in Hamburg. Authorities and downstream actors such as the fire department, police, port staff, and aid organizations need a common situational picture for operational planning and real-time information on the status quo in the event of a disaster. Particularly affected are the Port of Hamburg and the districts of Wilhelmsburg and HafenCity.
At the event, RESCUE-MATE demonstrated a digital twin that continuously incorporates real-time data and provides a comprehensive situational picture for emergency responders and decision-makers. Through the shared data platform, sensor data, social media, and drone-based information are integrated to minimize risks to emergency personnel, improve the evacuation and care of citizens, and enable precise operational planning. Swarms of drones assist in locating and rescuing drowning individuals and contribute to situational awareness during evacuation drills.
HCDS is pleased with the positive feedback and constructive discussions at the Homecoming Homeport Event and thanks all participants for their lively exchange and support.
