On January 21, 2025, RESCUE-MATE, a research project of the Hub of Computing and Data Science (HCDS), was presented as part of the launch of Hamburg’s Digital Strategy. As one of four selected projects actively shaping Hamburg’s digital transformation, the team showcased its latest technological developments at the Mayor’s Hall in Hamburg City Hall.
Digital Technologies for Disaster Management
Ahead of the State Press Conference on the Digital Strategy, journalists had the opportunity to explore the four featured projects in greater detail. The RESCUE-MATE team not only provided an overview of the research initiative but also demonstrated innovative solutions for disaster preparedness and response.
A key highlight was an augmented reality visualization that enables a dynamic representation of flood scenarios. Using an AR headset and touchscreen, users could experience a seamless transition from a 2D map to an interactive 3D model. This visualization makes it possible to display rising water levels, serving as an effective tool to raise public awareness of flood risks.
Another major feature was the presentation of a disaster response app that automatically navigates citizens to the nearest emergency shelter in the event of a storm surge. At the same time, the app allows users to report flooded streets or blocked roads, sharing critical real-time information with emergency services. This function enhances the efficiency of evacuation processes while improving overall public safety.
Political Support and Networking
Among the key attendees were Christian Pfromm, CDO of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, and Jan Pörksen, State Councilor and Head of the Senate Chancellery. Both were able to experience firsthand the smart disaster response solutions and engage with the project team on the role of digital technologies in decision-making during crisis situations.
Beyond showcasing RESCUE-MATE, the event also served as a platform for exchange and collaboration with the other featured projects. Discussions focused on data utilization, digital potential, and the future development of smart applications for Hamburg.
By being included in Hamburg’s Digital Strategy, RESCUE-MATE reinforces its position as a pioneering project in the fields of disaster management and digital resilience. The project’s research and technological solutions will contribute to the advancement of digital tools for crisis response and their practical implementation in the future.
