To further foster inclusive AI research, Prof. Chris Biemann, from the House of Computing and Data Science (HCDS), Universität Hamburg, Germany, in collaboration with Prof. Adem Chanie Ali from the Department of Journalism and Communications at Bahir Dar University, Ethiopia, has been awarded a $60k grant from the Google Award for Inclusion Research Program for a project titled "AI-driven Monitoring of Attitude Polarization in Conflict-Affected Countries for Inclusive Peace Process and Women's Empowerment."
This research aims to address the critical global issues of hate speech and polarization, with a particular emphasis on regions grappling with conflicts. The project focuses on women, who often find themselves the primary targets of divisive rhetoric in conflict-ridden areas. The research is aimed to empower peacebuilders and facilitate more inclusive peace processes, envisioning a world where women's voices are not only heard but also actively contribute to conflict resolution, fostering a harmonious society. The "Collective & Society Centered AI (C&SCAI)" research area, under which this grant is awarded, emphasizes the importance of a collective and inclusive vision for AI research.
