The International Workshop on Semantic Evaluation (SemEval) is one of the most popular venues in the NLP community for advancing methods through shared tasks. For SemEval 2026, the Language Technology group (LT) and the Hub of Computing and Data Science (HCDS) are proud to co-organize two tasks.
Task 4: Narrative Story Similarity and Narrative Representation Learning:
This task challenges systems to identify narratively similar stories. Narrative similarity is defined along three core dimensions:
- Abstract Theme: ideas and motives of the story
- Course of Action: sequence of central events and turning points
- Outcomes: results and resolutions of the story
The task is organized in collaboration with the fortext lab and Toloka AI.
Organizers: Hans Ole Hatzel, Ekaterina Artemova, Haimo Stiemer, Evelyn Gius & Chris Biemann.
Task 9: Detecting Multilingual, Multicultural and Multievent Online Polarization:
This task addresses a socially urgent and computationally complex challenge: how to detect, classify, and explain online polarization across languages, cultures, and events. It covers over 20 languages, including German, Spanish, English, Arabic, Hausa, Urdu, Amharic, Italian, Russian, Myanmar, Chinese, Nepali, Hindi, Telugu, Persian, Turkish, Bangla, Somali, Emakhuwa, Mozambican Portuguese, Igbo (Nigeria), Khmer, Odia, Punjabi.
